Qualities to look for when selecting a hook for fishing meat

The first thing to consider is the colour of the hook, because sometimes a silver hook will glint and possibly scare a fish off. Always opt for a dark or bronze colour hook for meat fishing that has a wide gap between the hook point and the shank often called "the gape".

Mustad produce the Stillwater Power Carp barbless which is the best meat hook on the market because it is strong and has a wide gape which can easily hold a good lump of either meat or even paste.

But, other companies also produce hooks with a wide gape and different thicknesses of steel from which they are made.
