How to correctly put meat on a hook - without a baiting needle?

This tip will give you better bait presentation and without requiring the use of a baiting needle. In fact the bait once hooked should be capable of a gentle cast without falling off.
Choose a chunk of meat suitable for the size of hook to be used. There is little point using a 1/2" piece of meat with a size 16 hook!

Do not put the hook into the meat.
Do not pull the hook through the meat.
Do not use a baiting needle or bait drill.

Do hold the hook by the eye, between your finger and thumb, with the hook point pointing downwards and away from your hand.
Do not move the hook.

Take the piece of meat (your bait) in your other hand and move it towards and against the shank of the hook. Slowly sink the hook point until it is buried within the bait with the hook point towards the centre of the meat and the shank against the outside.
Do not move the hand holding the hook.

Now flick the bait upwards with your free thumb.
The hook should travel through the meat without splitting it and with the point just visible on the outside.

The meat should be securely impaled on the hook. Fish as usual.
