Does the trace length make a difference when surf casting?

The length of the rig has no effect on actual casting because it is clipped to the leader. The drop of the leader is then adjusted to a length to suit the angler's casting style and capabilities.

What does make a difference is the way the rig is constructed, the type and size of lead used and the size of the bait. Big baits flapping about fly badly through the air and often wobble in flight which results in lost casting distance.

Smaller baits, clipped down tight behind a lead, fly much straighter and much further. Clipped baits don't explode in the air either and land on the seabed in one piece, which the fish find far more appealing
