What tackle and flies should I use for river trout fishing

Because river fishing is a close quarters sport and the quarry we seek are much smaller than reservoir fish, tackle should be scaled down for stream trouting. Lighter tackle results in lots "feel" and action.

Ideally, an 8ft/8ft 6in rod rated for a 3/4 line and a small reel to balance the outfit. A sombre colour floating line won't scare the fish so much and then, of course, you need tapered leaders and tippet material. A fluorocarbon covered 4lb and 5lb leader would be ideal for nymph fishing.

A selection of dry flies, nymphs and spiders tied on size small 12-20 hooks along with a small pan shaped landing net and a small tackle bag should make a lightweight outfit.
